I recently read the book The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: The Second summer by Ann Brashares. I chose this book because my friend Marni and I have a little obsession with The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, so since I read the first book I am continuing on to the second one. This book takes place in the summer. There are four main characters in the book, Bridget, Carmen, Lena, and Tibby. All the main characters are located in different locations in the story. Bridget is located in Burgess, Alabama so she can visit her Grandma, Greta, Carmen and Lena are staying at home in Washington, DC, and Tibby is attending a film program at Williamson College. The book is told in first and third person. For each book in the series one of the four main characters narrates the prologue. In this book Lena's the narrator.
The main characters, Bridget, Carmen, Lena, and Tibby are four best friends known as "The Septembers" because believe it or not they were all born in September. "The Septembers" own a "magical" pair of jeans, known as the pants that fit them all equally even though they all have different shapes and sizes. This is only their second summer apart and the pants bring them together. Every week the pants get shipped from Carmen, to Lena, to Tibby, to Bridget and then the cycle continues. While the pants are being shipped from friend to friend there are letters inside from the person that had them last. This book has lots of emotional twists and turns that will make you want to read more everyday.

If you looked at Bridget "Bee" Vreeland last year compared to this year you would never recognized her. She used to be a thin, blonde, outgoing, athletic girl. Now Bridget has gained weight, dyed her hair brown, and quit sports (even her favorite sport, soccer)! Bridget finds out that her Grandmother has been writing her letters for years ever since her mother, Marly passed away from suicide due to prolonged and mental problems. After finding out this information Bee decides to take a trip to Burgess, Alabama where her grandmother, Greta lives. But of course instead of going the easy way out Bee decides to hide her identity and pretend she is Gilda Tomoko who wants to help around the house. Bridget does this so she can be able to reconnect with her grandmother without showing who she really is and learn about Marly growing up. During this adventure Bee finds out many things about her mothers past and remembers things about hers before she started to disconnect with her grandmother. During this journey Bridget reconnects with her childhood friend Billy Kline and gives him and his team advice about soccer. While doing this Bridget remembers the old Bee and wishes she had her again. She decides that she wants to stop being a couch potato and starts running again and starts a little soccer. Bee sees that she is starting to get fit so she washes out all of her brown hair coloring and finally changes. At the end of the book she finds out that Greta knows who she is and stops pretending to be Gilda. She tells her secret to Billy too and now they are very close friends again.

Of course though she has another problem that makes her really angry. Her mother gets a new boyfriend, David and he's all she can think about. All the time it's just David, David, David and never Carmen! Carmen's fed up with David and Christina always being together without ever thinking about Carmen so she decides to break them up. Last summer when Lena Kaligaris went to Greece she met her true love, Kostos. When she came back from Greece she missed him very much. Everyday Lena and Kostos would write each other letters. One day Effie, Lena's younger sister surprised her with… Kostos! She was so shocked and so happy at the same time but she didn't say a word. As the days went by that Kostos was in town Lena started to feel more and more comfortable with him and began to love him even more than she did before. After what feels like the shortest amount of time Kostos has to leave but he doesn't say why. After he leaves for Greece they continue to write but Kostos still won't tell Lena why he had to leave DC. About two weeks later the Kaligaris family got a horrible phone call from Lena's Grandmother. She told them that Lena's Bapi (Grandfather) had a stroke and they have to go to Greece. After her Bapi's funeral Lena finds out that Kostos is having a baby with another girl that he only dated three times therefore, he is engaged to her. At this point Lena is heart broken and feels betrayed. When the Kaligaris' finally came home from Greece all Lena did was cry in bed.
This summer Tibby Tomoko went to a film school called Williamson College. When she goes to college she meets Alex and Maura who become her good friends. When her best friend Brian comes to visit Tibby feels embarrassed because Brian is "awkward" and Alex and Maura are "cool". Because of this Tibby tries to keep them as separate as possible. For class Tibby has to make a film. Last summer she became very close with a twelve year old girl named Bailey. Bailey unfortunately had leukemia and passed away at the end of the summer. Tibby wanted to make her film about her but she thought that it would seem weird to Alex and Maura. Instead of doing that Tibby decided to make an embarrassing video of her mother. Alex and Maura approved because they thought it was funny so she did it. One day that summer Brian and Tibby were supposed to go out for lunch but then she accidentally double-booked with Alex and Maura. Tibby decided to lie to Brian and go out with her other friends. During her film presentation Brian finds out that Tibby is sneaking around to hang out with Alex and Maura. Also, her mother, Alice watches the presentation and finds out that she was secretly filming her. This leads to conflicts with Brian and Alice. Brian doesn't want to be friends with Tibby anymore so he gives her the silent treatment while Alice storms off and gets very angry at Tibby. Tibby feels awful about what happens so she goes to Brian's house and clears things up with him. Tibby soon makes a new video presentation about Bailey because now she realizes that the meaning of friendship is that her friends should not judge her by who she hangs out with and what she does. When Tibby presents the video screening and apologizes to Alice her mother finally forgives her.
I could connect to Tibby's situation because when I first came to middle school I started to make lots of new friends. My friends thought that I wanted to be with my friends from other schools more than I wanted to be with them. When they confronted me I realized that I was being a little exclusive so I started to bring them back into my bubble again. I would only recommend this book to the females in my class. This is because The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: The Second Summer relates to a "chick flick" but in book form. My book has lots of romance and emotional problems that most males do not want to read, watch, or talk about. I would recommend this book to females only because it is very relatable.
