The Hunger Games

Imagine standing with everyone in your district, waiting to see if it’s you who would be the one to fight for your life and district. If you were going to be the one trapped inside an arena and not knowing if your coming out alive. If you were going to be standing with 24 other tributes that you don’t know. I mean who would want to be a part of that? But anyways, these were things that you would worry about if you lived in a district in Panem just like Katniss Everdeen (doesn’t that sound fun). This all happens in a wonderful book called The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
There’s lots of books that I could’ve chosen to read but I was really interested into reading The Hunger Games because I saw the movie and I really enjoyed it. Believe me when I say I’m not a book person. I mostly read it because I heard a lot of good reviews from friends that already read it. Not only did I read the book because I enjoyed the movie but also I heard good reviews from my other friends that really liked the book.
This story takes place in Panem. The arena of The Hunger Games, was very, very big with different types of lands. Imagine being in one area and it’s very dry, then another area can be very wet and muddy. It also had different types of bugs and animals. Some of the features of the arena were dirt like, slopes, lakes, wheat field, many different types of trees, and so much more. You could but in a dry, and very dirty one minute then a very muddy and wet area in another. I don’t know about you but how cool is that? You can’t do that everyday.
The Hunger Games is told in the point of view of Katniss Everdeen. Katniss was the normal teenager who lived in district 12. She saved her sister from being forced into The Hunger Games by being a volunteer as tribute. Prior to the Hunger Games she would hunt for animals to support her family. That was her advantage into the hunger games since she already had experience and was advanced in hunting. She was very strong, and brave. Not only did she change Hunger Games history by making the gamemakers crown two victors, (Katniss and Peeta), she also is a great person. When her ally Rue, was killed, Katniss set her down in a field of flowers and showed her respect to Rue’s district. Even though they were still competing against each other she wanted to show her respect.
In the nation of Panem, a big capitol containing 12 districts. If you thought school was harsh and cruel, try living in one of those twelve districts. Every year if you were ages 12 - 18, you would have your chance in being in the annual Hunger Games. From every district, one girl and one boy were chosen to fight to the death until there was one person standing. Everyone watches TV for their own entertainment because its funny and/or exciting. To the people in Panem this was theirs. Their entertainment was to watch teenagers kill each other. What kind of world do they live in?! The theme of this story is to be brave and stay strong throughout everything. I think that this would be a good theme for this book because once Katniss volunteered to be a participant in the Hunger Games, she didn’t think about losing. She stood strong for her mom and sister and told them that she would come back.
Now how can this story connect to our life? Well, it doesn’t. Like seriously, who makes 24 teenagers kill each other for other people? What about the parents of the kids? Do you think they like to see their kids kill someone or pass away right in front of their eyes? I believe they don’t. Also what about Panem? They all live in districts. Obviously we don’t live in districts we live in towns. This book was very different from other books and I really liked it. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book because it’s not like every other book. I’ve never seen a book with the same plot of this book. I thought if was very interesting how Suzanne Collins put a lot of details in the story and made cliffhangers after every chapter. So if you’re looking for a good book The Hunger Games is my best recommendation.
