Group 5 Mercy and John Holbrook Dialogue
James Taufman, Caleb Joseph, Matthew Kartzinel, Brendan Ng
It
was mid-autumn and the air was bitter. The sun had set and the moon was
just shining its face through the clouds. Most of the residents in the
town of Wethersfield were finishing supper and were getting ready to
sleep. The candles in the Wood residence could be seen dancing through
the window panes. Mercy was about to lay down in her bed and put out the
candles, when there was a knock on the door. Mercy slowly hobbled
across the creaking floorboards. Before Mercy could open the door, it
bolted open. A dark figure appeared in the doorway.
“John! Come in,” Mercy gestured. “Would you like anything to drink?” asked Mercy.
No, I’ve been meaning to talk to you,” John whispered in an unsteady
tone. “ I came here to talk to you about my decision. Do you think its
worth it, risking my life to save others?” “I don’t know John… I believe you’re doing the right thing,” assented Mercy. “But I'll be breaking Judith's heart.” “She’ll
understand. You are doing the right thing. As a matter of fact I think
she will be proud of you. You want to prove something to her, do you not?” Mercy sighed. Silence settled in the small room. The silence was broken when John said, “But there is something holding me back.” “What is it John?” Mercy exclaimed. “Mercy, the night that I asked to take Judith in marriage I was really going to ask you,” John confessed. “Oh
John,” Mercy said with her eyes tearing with Joy. “John, I had the same
feelings for you this whole time. I loved you ever since I heard you
read Anne Bradstreet poetry.” “
Kit told me that. It is the only reason I had the courage to ask you
for your hand. Well it doesn’t matter now. I have to go the militia
leaves in an hour, I have to pack my tools and get going.” “But John can’t you stay a little longer, Judith probably wants to talk to you too. Do you have to leave now, I- I mean Judith would want to see you longer. How do you think Judith will feel when she hears about this.” Just then, the stairs started to creak as half asleep Judith sauntered down stairs.“What
is all the commotion?” Judith yawned. “John you are here! I thought you
were leaving for the militia. Why are you here so late?" “I just wanted to say good bye” John said.“Good bye John. I will miss you so much,” sobbed Judith.“Bye
John. Stay safe,” Mercy said. She was quietly sobbing too as John
slowly closed the door. The candle light was blown out as Mercy and
Judith went off to bed.
