A Letter From Kit
By: Jared Klinkowize
Dear, Charity
I have finally arrived in America! I have mixed emotions about arriving in America. The journey was so long the ship smelled like poo and it will take me weeks to get the stench out of my hair especially without your help. When I saw America I hesitated “I did not want to admit how disappointing I found my first glimpse of America” (7). Also on our trip to America a little girl dropped her doll in the water so I went in the water to get when I got out everyone was calling me a witch so confused.Help! Do you like your new family? How is Barbados without me?
It is so weird in America I was having a chat with my friend John Holbrook he called Barbados “That heathen island”(11). I don’t understand why but he cringed when I said I had slaves. Life in Connecticut is very different than in life in Barbados. In Connecticut they run their own farm so I have to do my own work. I have to pick onions and cook food who would think of “Sir Francis Tyler’s granddaughter, squatting in a onion patch”(79).“I am still far too weak to fend for myself”(39). But I got a job teaching children how to read and write! It is so cool but one lesson I had the children act out a scene from the bible and I got yelled at and got me and Mercy fired. That is ok in Barbados I have no clue what I did wrong. I miss you so much Charity!
It was very exciting to meet my aunt Rachel Wood. She is just as gorgeous as Grandfather set her out to be. I have two wonderful cousins as well. I have cousin named Judith she is just as gorgeous a thy Rachel Wood her mother but she can be a bit bratty sometimes. My other cousin Mercy is about as smart as me she is very nice and caring but she has a disease so she cannot walk. My uncle Matthew Wood is very mean to me. He says I am useless and can do nothing right. He also is against the king. How dare he! I also met this boy called William Ashby he is very charming and has lots of great land we may get married. He is the reason I am happy in America.
Another very interesting person I met was Hannah Tupper. She is different from everyone just like me. She is a different religion from the puritans and is the only one who lives by Blackbird Pond where no one else lives. I asked Judith about her one day on our way to the onion field Judith said “ People say she is a witch”(77). So I was saying before when I got yelled at for telling the children to act out a scene from the bible I ran to the meadow and was crying and fell asleep for a few hours. When I woke up I saw Hannah Tupper she told me “ Thee did well to come to the meadow”(91). Then Hannah Tupper took me in to her house gave me some food and show me African flowers and told me “ My friend brought the bulb to me, I doubted it would grow here, it was determined to keep on trying and look what happened”(97). This also reminds me of being an outsider my fancy clothes compared to their plain clothes. So inspired me to tell Mr.Kimberly the head of our dame school to let me and Mercy teach again. Hope to hear from you soon Charity.
Love,
Kit
