Kit’s Letter
Dear Bernard,
I have just made it to America. The boat ride took forever! First we stopped at SayBrook then there was no wind so we were stuck there. It took nine days for us to Wethersfield.I had two choices, the first choice was that I could stay at Barbados but I had to marry my grandpa. The second choice was that I didn’t have to marry my grandpa but I had to move to Connecticut. On the boat, it all started when a little girl put her doll in the air so the doll could see all around the boat. Thats when the little girl dropped her doll in the water. The little girl begged her ma if she can grab it out of the water but her ma told her that she was foolish that she threw away the toy that her grandpa made her. Then the child asked the captain to turn around so she could get her doll from the water, but the captain didn’t want to turn around so I dived into the water to get the doll for the child. After I dived into the water, Nat thought that she couldn’t swim so he dived into the water after her. When I got back up to the surface, everyone was surprised, even Nat. I didn’t know why everyone was surprised. Then when I got back on the boat, everybody was looking at me and then the women yelled at me saying “you must be daft, to jump into the river and ruin those clothes!” (9) On that boat, I met a person named John Holbrook. He was training to be a minister. I told him that I was on the way to Whethersfield to live with my aunt, Mistress Wood and my uncle, Matthew Wood. I found out that my uncles name is well known along the river I was traveling on. John wondered how I could swim and then I told him that I wasn’t from here, I was from Barbados. When I told him, he called the island “heathen”. The reason why was because he said that we have slaves do everything for us and we don’t do any work. He told me that “so your not a puritan then” and I told him no. I call the puritans roundheads because they wear those hats that cover your whole head. I didn’t know that connecticut is full of puritans. On the boat, the smell reeked! It smelled like the boat had a stash of dead bodies somewhere.
When I got there I completely pictured it differently.
When I got to my new home, my aunt was very happy and so was my sisters. The only person who wasn’t happy was uncle Matthew. He just took my bags and grunted at me.
