A Letter From Kit Chris M

Dear Ellis,

Hi Ellis! How are you I miss you a lot I have a lot to catch you up on.I had a rough journey to America and its not as nice as I thought it was going to be. It was filthy and smelly, “that stable smell,I’ll never get it out of my hair.” (22) I was accused of being a witch because I jumped into the ice cold water after a little girls doll because it fell into the water and the little girl was really upset and she just got it from her grandpa. If you float in Connecticut you are considered to be a witch, back in Barbados we were taught to swim when we were really young. I have to say “there is something about this country or America something that they all seemed to share and understand and I didn’t” (14). When ever I think I'm being helpful its not on the boat. I meet lots of people on the boat i met Goodwife Cruff she was very strict. She was the mother of the little girl who dropped the doll she made her daughter stand behind the table and only give the girl tiny pieces of food. l also met Nat Eaton he is the son of the captain of the sailing ship the Dolphin. At times Nat and I don’t get along that well. Nat is friends with Hannah Tupper too. I also met  John Holbrook, he was unable afford college, so he has traveled to Wethersfield to study with the Dr. Reverend Bulkeley. He arrived in Wethersfield at the same time as me.

As soon as I caught up to my family I was relieved  they were really nice and friendly but my Uncle Matthew didn't seem that excited that I was here because I was a girl and I couldn't help out which looked like he was downhearted. The lifestyle was so much different different foods, no slaves, and they could only read the holy book. I have two cousins Judith Wood and Mercy, she is kind and patient and suffered from a fever as a child that has left her with one leg. I have a aunt Rachel Wood. My  Uncle Matthew is sometimes harsh, I heard that they had lost two sons. As for the two daughters, Mercy is kind and patient and suffered from a fever as a child that has left her lame in one leg. .

I met a woman named Hannah Tupper people call her The witch of the blackbird pond and The Widow Tupper. people think she is a witch because she live right by the pond. another reason is because there is a Big flood almost every year and it completely took out Hannah's house and four years later she was back, people think she was with other witches in those four years and she brews a lot. Hannah Tupper was a Quaker from Massachusetts and at this time if you were a Quaker you would probably get killed. That is why she moved here she doesn't like living where mostly everyone else is she likes living where she is because it is peaceful and quiet and she has been shunned from the community. Hannah is a fan of fluffy kittens, and, blueberry cake. She is also connected to Nat Eaton.

Hopefully you get this I miss you and everyone else in Barbados tell everyone I said hi!

                    Sincerely,
                                     Kathrine
