Dear Mary,
I miss you so much, Mary. You were my most loyal nursemaid I’ve ever had in my life! I was really hoping that you would’ve came with me to Connecticut, but I had no money left. I’ve also been through many hardships during my journey to Connecticut. I’ve been called a “witch” a few times for swimming in water and reading my favorite book by william Shakespeare. Too bad I can’t change the Puritan rules. If I went against it, they would have me hanged!
It isn’t easy where I live now. I have to life with my uncle, Matthew Wood, and with my two cousins, Mercy and Judith. Mercy is very kind but crippled, Judith is pretty but not as kind. And I also live with my uncle’s wife, Rachel Wood. She is not as kind either. When I first saw my uncle, it looked like he didn’t want me to come at all.
On my way to Connecticut, i met a guy on the boat I was in, his name is John Holbrook. He is very kind to me and doesn’t believe I’m a witch. John is studying to become a Puritan. John is sometimes a bit brash. I like him but I’m pretty sure he isn’t interested in me. He is a nice friend and will always be a nice friend.
If I had one wish, I would wish that I would see my family again. I dream about them everyday. My grandfather, my Dad, and about you, Mary. “I don’t remember my parents at all,” she told him. “My father was born on the island and was sent to England to school. He met my mother there and brought her back to Barbados with him. They had only three years together. They were both drowned on a pleasure trip to Antigua, and Grandfather and I were left alone.”“Where there no women to care for you?”“Oh, slaves of course. I had a black nursemaid. But I never needed anyone but Grandfather. He was –” There were no words to explain Grandfather. (19)“
My grandfather died four months ago,” Kit explained.“Why, you poor child! All alone there on that island! Who did come with you, then?”“I came alone.” (34)
I will miss you, Mary. Your Friend,
Kit
