Mirror
I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
What ever you see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful---
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long.
I think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.
Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.
Mirrors are silver and show your exact reflection. It does not judge you because you are looking at yourself and you usually don't judge yourself. The mirror swallows your reflection in the glass and shows you yourself, whether you love yourself or not. If you are ugly the mirror is not trying to make you look ugly, it is just showing you yourself as others see you. The mirror hangs on the wall opposite you so you can see yourself whenever you want. The object the mirror sees all day is pink with speckles and the mirror feels close to this object because it sees this object all day long. The object flickers but when people look in the mirror, the mirror can't see the object and when it is dark at night the mirror can't see the object. A woman bends closer to a lake to see herself more closely. Then the woman turns around to look at the moon or a candle that shows a dishonest reflection and the lake sees her back and reflects it in the mirror. The woman cries because she is upset at her reflection in the lake and she is feeling sadness and despair. The woman comes every day and the lake sees her age from a little girl to an old lady.
