Mother to Son
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. <----- This means life is not easy or luxurious
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's, <--- She has reached good and pleasant times but there are still hard times here and there
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So, boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steset ps.
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
This poem "Mother to Son"
by Langston Hughes is a meaningful poem. It is about a mother telling her son
about life. She is comparing life to a stair case but, it's not a nice, smooth
stair case because life isn't easy. He describes the stairs with tacks and
splinters these represent the pain and hardships people face. He also says that
the boards are torn up and there's no carpet on the floor. He says this because
sometimes there are times u do not know what to do. The mother says that
sometimes she's going in the dark and there isn't light it's saying that there
are times of trouble and you may lose hope but you have to go on. In the poem
the mother also says don't set on the steps she saying you have to go on you can't
just give up because it's getting harder that's what life is it's not easy but
u can't just stop. In the end Langston Hughes's message in the poem is that
life is not easy that there's hardships, sadness and pain but with that comes
love, joy and happiness.
