Liz Von Brook Due 2/14
Mrs.Ortiz period 4
To whom this may concern,
Hello my name is Emma Edmonds. I was informed that my alias Franklin Thompson was titled as dishonorable discharge. I disguised myself as this man to contribute to the civil war. I did a lot for the union. I was brave, courageous and intelligent. I crossed rebel lines in quite a few missions. I had to desert the army after my second year because I became ill. I left because of the fear my true gender may be discovered. I did a lot to serve the union and support the cause.
On my first I disguised myself as a black man named Cuff.On this mission I learned things about the artillery and earthworks of the confederate camp. I took notes carefully and put them in my shoe. I then gave it to McClellan and informed him about what I learned.
When I Crossed rebel lines again I was disguised as an Irish peddler named Bridget O’Shea. When I crossed the lines this time I stayed with an ill soldier, to gain trust of the Confederate army. When he died he gave me a gold watch and told me to give it to Mr.McKee. Instead of writing and taking notes I made a mental list so I was less likely to get caught. Then they told me to lead them to the old house. I rode with a man and a learned a lot about the army and plans. I learned about men hidden behind trees ready to attack.I had no plan to get back to the union but one of the confederate men told me to keep watch outside the house. I saw my chance and rode the horse as fast as I could back to the union side. I was allowed to keep the horse as a reward granted by my colonel.
With my good spy skills and fine horsemanship messengers were needed. There were fights everywhere. I saw four troops but the patrol was being attacked by a band of renegades. Another time I took a short cut and saw some union soldiers I waved yet they weren’t waving they were signaling go. The soldiers were prisoners. I rode Rebel with our pursuers following behind shooting and firing I got a bullet in my shoulder I came across a ditch and I jumped Rebel for the first time. I got back and went to Mrs.Butler.
After being shot in the shoulder I was granted a two week furlough. I quickly got bored with the life of a civilian. I ended up volunteering as a nurse. I did this because wasn't content relaxing and doing nothing.
These are some of the reasons why I think my alias Franklin Thompson should be honored for his service in the army. I was a strong brave and passionate. I did a lot to support the cause of the army and I feel I should be honored for my service.
Sincerely,
Emma Edmonds
